How to Spot Roof Damage After a Storm | G and Bros
Living on the Eastern Shore side of Maryland means dealing with some intense weather. From heavy summer thunderstorms to harsh winter winds, our roofs take a beating. When the skies finally clear, it is important to check your home for storm damage. Catching a problem early can save you from a massive repair bill later.
Here is a quick guide on how to spot roof damage safely.
Step 1: Start on the Ground
You do not need to climb a ladder to find the first signs of trouble. Walk around your yard and look for debris. If you see broken shingles, pieces of metal flashing, or large tree branches near your foundation, your roof likely took a hit.

Step 2: Check Your Gutters
High winds and pounding rain can strip the protective granules off your asphalt shingles. Look at the bottom of your downspouts where the water drains out. If you see a large pile of dark, sand-like granules, your shingles are losing their primary layer of defense against the sun and rain.

Step 3: Scan the Roofline
Step back across the street or to the far edge of your yard. Look up at the slopes of your roof. You are looking for missing shingles, which will usually look like dark, uneven patches. Also, check the edges of the roof to see if any shingles are curling or lifting up. If the shingles are not laying completely flat, the wind has broken their adhesive seal.

Step 4: Look Indoors
Sometimes the most obvious signs of storm damage are inside your house. Go up to your attic during the day and look for sunlight peeking through the wood decking. Then, check the ceilings in your upper bedrooms for yellow or brown water stains. A new water stain means the storm has already breached your roofing system.
