Choosing the Right Roofing Material for the Eastern Shore | G and Bros

By : Guillermo Molina Matus

Living on the Eastern Shore is beautiful, but let’s be honest—it’s tough on our homes. Between the humid summers in Salisbury and the nor’easters that batter Ocean City, your roof takes a beating.

When it comes time to replace your roof, you can’t just pick what looks nice. You have to pick what survives. The salt air and high winds here change the rules.

Here is how the two most popular materials stack up against our coastal climate.

1. Asphalt Shingles (The Architectural Upgrade)

If you are looking at shingles, you need to be specific. The old-school “3-tab” shingles simply do not hold up well here. They are too thin and often only rated for 60 mph winds. One good storm off the Atlantic, and you’ll find them in your front yard.

The Solution: High-quality Architectural Shingles. At G and Bros, we recommend GAF architectural shingles for a few reasons:

  • Wind Rating: They are typically rated for up to 130 mph. This is crucial when those winter gusts come across the cornfields or off the bay.
  • Salt Resistance: Asphalt and fiberglass do not rust. They are naturally immune to the corrosion that salt air causes on cheaper metals.
  • Algae Resistance: Our humidity loves to grow black streaks (algae) on roofs. Modern architectural shingles come with “StainGuard” protection to keep your roof looking new.

2. Metal Roofing (The Coastal Defender)

Metal roofing is becoming incredibly popular in Wicomico and Worcester counties, and for good reason. It sheds water instantly and looks fantastic on coastal-style homes.

However, because we are so close to the ocean, you have to be careful about which metal you choose.

  • The Risk: Standard galvanized steel can rust quickly if it’s constantly exposed to salt spray.
  • The Solution: If you are right on the water in Ocean City, we often recommend Aluminum or high-grade steel with a specialized Kynar finish. Aluminum doesn’t rust, making it the king of the coast.

Which One is Right for You?

If you want the most affordable upfront cost with excellent wind protection, Architectural Shingles are the winner. They are the standard for 90% of homes in Salisbury.

If you plan to stay in your home for 30+ years and want a roof that can handle the harshest salt spray without blinking, Metal is the premium choice.

Still unsure? At G and Bros, we know exactly which materials work best for your specific zip code. Let’s look at your roof together.
